Summer Spending Hangover? 7 Ways to Get Your Budget Back on Track

volt-credit-union-summer-spending-tips

Summer has a funny way of making money disappear. If you spent more than you planned, don’t panic. The end of summer is the perfect time for a financial reset to get your budget back on track.

Between vacations, weekend getaways, concerts, dining out, back-to-school shopping and all those little “we’re making memories!” purchases, your budget may be looking a little different than it did at the beginning of summer.

Here are seven ways to recover from summer spending and head into fall feeling more confident about your finances.

1. Take a Look at Where Your Money Went

First things first: check the damage.

Okay, “damage” might be dramatic. But take a few minutes to review your checking account and credit card transactions from the past month or two.

Look for patterns. Did you spend more than usual on restaurants? Travel? Entertainment? Online shopping? Those $8 vacation coffees that somehow tasted better because you weren’t at home?

The goal isn’t to make yourself feel guilty. It’s to understand where your money went so you can make smarter decisions moving forward.

Quick tip: Check out our budgeting tool: Insights. Separate your spending into categories such as housing, groceries, dining out, transportation, entertainment, subscriptions and debt payments. You may be surprised by which category is eating up the biggest portion of your budget.

2. Give Your Budget a Fall Reset

Your summer budget and your fall budget don’t have to look the same.

As schedules change, take another look at your monthly income and expenses. Start with the essentials, then determine how much you realistically have available for savings, debt payments and fun.

If you’ve never created a budget before, keep it simple:

Money coming in – money going out = what you have left to save or spend.

The best budget isn’t necessarily the most complicated one. It’s the one you can actually stick with.

And remember: a budget isn’t about telling yourself “no” all the time. It’s about deciding where you want your money to go before it disappears somewhere else.

3. Press Pause on a Few Extras

You don’t have to cancel everything fun until your finances recover.

Instead, try a short-term spending reset.

For the next 30 days, choose a few nonessential expenses to reduce or eliminate. Maybe that means cooking at home a little more often, skipping impulse online purchases or finally canceling the subscription you forgot you had.

Even temporarily cutting $10 here and $25 there can add up.

Take the money you would have spent and put it toward your biggest financial priority, whether that’s rebuilding savings or paying down debt.

4. Make a Plan for Summer Credit Card Debt

If some of your summer fun landed on a credit card, now is a good time to make a payoff plan.

Start by listing each credit card balance along with its interest rate and minimum payment. Then decide how much extra you can put toward your debt each month.

Two popular debt payoff strategies are:

Debt avalanche: Focus extra payments on the debt with the highest interest rate first while continuing to make minimum payments on everything else.

Debt snowball: Focus on your smallest balance first, then roll that payment into the next debt once it’s paid off.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The important part is having a plan and consistently making progress.

If you’re carrying multiple high-interest balances, you may also want to explore whether debt consolidation could simplify your payments or potentially reduce the amount of interest you’re paying.

Volt Tip: Ditch the high rates and get a Volt Visa® Credit Card that’s built for real life—with low rates, no annual fees, and rewards that give back.

5. Rebuild Your Emergency Savings

Did an unexpected car repair, travel expense or other summer surprise dip into your emergency fund?

That’s exactly what emergency savings are there for.

Now it’s time to start rebuilding.

You don’t have to replace everything overnight. Set a manageable savings goal and automate a small transfer every payday. Even $10, $25 or $50 at a time can help rebuild your financial cushion.

If you’re starting from scratch, focus first on creating a small emergency fund you can use when life’s inevitable “well, that’s going to cost money” moments happen.

Once you’ve reached that goal, you can continue building toward a larger emergency savings fund.

6. Start Saving for the Holidays Now

We know. It’s still summer.

But the holidays have a habit of showing up approximately five minutes after Labor Day.

Starting a holiday savings fund now can help you avoid putting gifts, travel, food and celebrations entirely on credit cards later.

Estimate what you’d like to spend during the holiday season and divide that amount by the number of paychecks you have left before you need the money.

Then set up automatic transfers into a separate savings account.

Future you may be very grateful.

7. Set One Financial Goal for the Rest of the Year

You don’t need to completely overhaul your finances in one weekend.

Pick one goal you want to accomplish before the end of the year.

Maybe you want to:

  • Save $500 for emergencies.
  • Pay off a credit card.
  • Build your holiday fund.
  • Stop overdrawing your checking account.
  • Reduce unnecessary monthly expenses.
  • Start automatically saving every payday.

Make your goal specific and realistic, then break it into smaller milestones. Our Insights budgeting tool can help!

Progress beats perfection every time.
