Stay Alert: Credit Union Impersonation Scam
We have been informed that some of our members have recently received phone calls from scammers posing as credit union employees. Fraudsters have the ability to spoof phone numbers, including credit union phone numbers, and use pieces of personally identifiable information to gain member trust before stealing account funds or information. This tactic is known as vishing.
These members reported the caller id had our lost/stolen number and the individual wanted to verify some charges that was trying to clear their account.
Please note, our Fraud Center does not ask the member to verify their card number or their one-time PIN (OTP), as we have this information.
How Do Imposter Scams Work?
Impersonation scams involve scammers pretending to be someone else to deceive individuals for financial gain or personal information. Scammers pose as trusted entities and manipulate victims into divulging sensitive information or transferring funds. To avoid these deceptive tactics, verify the identity of anyone making unsolicited contact and refrain from sharing personal or financial details without thorough authentication.
These criminals can be very persuasive, and some even use artificial intelligence to sound or look like those they’re impersonating. Here are some of the ways they’ll try to trick you.
- They’ll contact you through a phone call, email, text message or social media message.
- They might even spoof the email or phone number of the person or organization they’re impersonating, so it appears they’re really contacting you.
- They may use deepfake technology to create voice recordings or videos of someone you know.
- They might use the real name and contact info of authority figures (like law enforcement) or celebrities.
- They may also use phishing techniques by creating logos and fake websites that look almost like the real thing.
