Don’t Get Hooked: How to Spot Vishing Scams

Scams are getting smarter—and more personal. One growing tactic is Vishing, or “voice phishing.” It’s when scammers call you pretending to be a trusted source—like your credit union, a government agency, or a delivery service—to trick you into giving up sensitive personal or financial information.

What Does a Vishing Scam Look Like?

A scammer might:

  • Say there’s a problem with your account and they need to “verify” your identity.
  • Claim suspicious activity has been detected and ask you to “confirm” your account number, debit card info, or digital wallet access.
  • Urgently ask for two-factor authentication codes, OTPs (one-time passcodes), or 3D Secure codes sent to your phone or email.

They may sound convincing. They may even spoof our phone number or use the name of a real Volt employee. But here’s the bottom line:

Volt Credit Union will NEVER:

  • Ask for your account number, routing number, debit or credit card number, or your username and password over the phone or via text.
  • Request two-way authentication codes, 3D Secure codes, or OTP (one-time passcodes) for digital wallets.
  • Pressure you into giving information or act offended if you pause to verify the request.

Stay Sharp: What You Can Do

Here are some simple but powerful ways to protect yourself from vishing and other fraud:

Always pause and verify.

If you receive a suspicious call, tell the person, “I’m going to call Volt Credit Union back directly.” Hang up and dial our official number. Any Volt employee or our Fraud Center will fully understand and support this—no pushback, no guilt trips.

Think before you click.

Don’t click on random links in texts or emails that promise free items, say you owe tolls or postage, or need to “claim” a prize. If it seems too good (or too strange) to be true—it probably is.

Read before you respond.

Carefully read any texts before entering codes or confirming information. Scammers often try to create panic to get you to act fast without thinking. Slow down and review before you respond.

Protect your personal info like it’s gold.

Because it is. Never give out login credentials, card numbers, or any personal data unless YOU initiated the contact and are 100% sure who you’re speaking with.
