Here at Volt Credit Union, we want you to save money, just like any other financial institution. However, we also want you to enjoy life. We understand that you can’t just stay at home and pinch pennies. So we’ve put together a list of ways for you to take that vacation this summer and save money while you’re doing it. Get ready; you’re going to be packed up and beach-bound before you know it!

Choose a Destination

First thing’s first: choosing a destination. Consider something within driving distance. This eliminates high airline costs and the concern for packing within certain constraints to be able to fly. On top of that, you’ll have transportation when you arrive at your destination without having to rent a car or buy taxi rides. Your situation may dictate how long you’re able to spend in a car, whether or not you have potty-trained kiddos or a dog that doesn’t do well on long car rides. Either way, figure out how far you’re comfortable driving and then choose a list of destinations that fit.

Share the Joy (And Expenses)

Second, consider sharing a vacation rental. Do you have close friends that are overdue for a getaway as well? It can be cost-effective and fun to add to your vacation group. Websites like Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway all rent out large homes in cities all across the country. By adding another family or parents, expenses are split between more people lowering the cost for all.

When you go to book, redeem any built-up points or miles you’ve accumulated. Almost every booking site has a point system based on loyalty and past activity, and now is the time to use them. Check to see if your credit card has any travel reward as well. If you need any help getting set up with a credit card that can benefit your next trip, come on in and see us at Volt, and we’re happy to help you out.

All Inclusive Option

If you want a one-stop-shop for ease of planning and purchasing, consider your all-inclusive options. Whether it’s a resort or a cruise, opting for an inclusive option takes the planning pressure off you. All you have to worry about is getting there, and food, activities, and service are all provided.

If you do decide to fly, consider a different schedule for flights. Most people schedule their vacation around the weekends, which makes flight prices spike. Studies have shown that flights during the week are significantly cheaper than weekend flights, with Tuesday being the overall cheapest day to book a plane ticket.
